Tschechien soll erst
2007 volles Mitglied des "Schengenlands" sein.
Border Crossing from Grosschoenau-Haupt St/Germany to
Varnsdorf-Zitavska St/Czech Republic. Open only for pedestrians and cyclists on
special occasions such as holidays or festivities in both cities since the early
nineties. Basically, the width and condition of the road would allow for a
classic car border crossing. However, authorities in both countries don't want
to invest in checkpoint buildings anymore as the Czech Republic is expected to
become a full member of the Schengen area in 2007 making passport controls
obsolete. Before 1938 it used to be a border crossing between Bohemia and
Saxony. Between 1938 and 1945 there was no border as the Sudetenland was
incorporated into the German Reich. The border gate was erected after
restoration of Czechoslovakia in 1945. Between 1945 and 1990 the border was
completely shut down to anyone. According to Czech-German Expert Commission this
border crossing is on the to-do list of reopenings.
